I think standing ovations are too readily given today. As an accomplished actor, legendary tuba player, and guitar hero, I am used to standing ovations (wink). But the sad reality is that standing ovations are way to easy to get. All a performer has to do is show up, and he or she get a standing ovation! The performance doesn't have to be legendary, mythical, or even great. It just has to be okay. The easy standing-O detracts from the meaning of the applause. If every performance gets a standing ovation, then it isn't special any more.
